YERMA

Yerma Theatre forum adapted from Federico Garcia Lorca

Summary : In an Andalusian village, Yerma, married to Juan, is deeply unhappy because she desperately wants children and remains childless after several years of marriage. This situation causes her growing frustration, as she seems to believe that her femininity can only be expressed through motherhood. Her unhappiness is exacerbated by Juan’s indifference, as he does not share her desire for children and seems insensitive to her distress. Yerma is confined to the house and domestic life, like all the other women in the village, to whom she confides and who offer her certain solutions to remedy her situation. Yerma ends up killing Juan, revealing the depth of her despair and inner conflict.
